Howell Memorial Cross

Wee run this morning, from Threlkeld to Keswick over Blencathra, Great Calva and Skiddaw - the last leg of an anti-clockwise Bob Graham Round (BGR), about 12 miles and 5000 feet of climbing. This was a recce with Paul who plans to celebrate his 70th birthday by completing another BGR which is a run of about 65 miles and 28,500 feet of climbing to be completed within 24 hours.

Coming down off Skiddaw this afternoon we ran passed this memorial which sits high on the side of the mountain and, for once, I stopped and went back to have proper look.

The memorial is in "Loving memory of two Skiddaw shepherds" Father and son, Edward and Joseph Hawell who were noted 19th Century champion breeders of the local Herdwick sheep. A third name, Richard Hawell, was added early in the 20th Century.

The next time I come passed here with Paul we'll be chasing the clock and there will be no stopping to admire the view, the memorial or anything else.
