Nelson

Lovely day today so I went to the Portsmouth Historic Dockyards, a fairly easy train journey. Unfortunately the submarine and its museum, which I particularly wanted to see,  were closed, but I went on the harbour trip and then into the Nelson Museum.

Lots of portraits of Nelson exist, and vary widely in appearance. It seemed everyone was portraying a different aspect of him. Eventually a life mask was found, and this bust is the nearest we're going to get to how he looked. He was quite short and thin, and went grey early after having his arm amputated. But he was charismatic and inspired men to follow him, and arrived at an interesting arrangement with Emma Hamilton and her husband.
