Livingston Avenue Bridge

This is the Livingston Avenue Bridge over the Hudson River connecting Albany, NY and Rensselaer, NY.

The original structure was built in 1866 and was replaced in 1901 by the current bridge. A rotating swing bridge, it still operates to allow large ships to proceed up the Hudson River.

The house like structure on top of the bridge is an active railroad interlocking tower and the block operator on duty is responsible for directing rail traffic around Amtrak's Rensselaer terminal as well as opening and closing the bridge.

The Green Island Bridge had opened to the north at Troy, NY in 1835. This bridge at the time was the only bridge authorized to cross the Hudson. This gave Troy a monopoly on railroad traffic.

When President Lincoln first traveled to Washington, DC he passed over the Hudson River at Troy. When his remains traveled to back to Illinois they traveled over the first Livingston Avenue Bridge.
