Burgh Castle Saxon Shore Fort

Burgh Castle was built c290 and garrisoned in the early 4th Century by the Equites Stablesiani under the command of the Count of the Saxon Shore.  The name of the fort and civilian settlement is thought to be Garionnonum as recorded in the Notitia Dignitatum, an army and civil service list that has survived from Late Antiquity.

The thinking is that naval vessels based here could patrol the 'Great Estuary' roughly what is now known as Broadland which was under-water and could intercept Saxon pirates and hunt them down by land and by sea.

The walls of Burgh Castle are well preserved and stand on 3 sides of a rectangle.
