Funky fungus

This is an image of a type of fungus called Septoria - it infects wheat crops. I've imaged them with a microscope using chemical contrast from lipids inside the cells while they're still alive. These delicate, spindly fungi store fatty acids inside lipid droplets. When I use some expensive lasers to image them, these droplets light up like little lanterns. It's a pretty cool technique :D

The scale bar shows 20 microns - one micron is one thousand times smaller than a millimetre. These things are pretty small, you guys!
