There was an interesting programme about David Hockney on television. He explained that one of the reasons behind his "joiners" (multiple photos combined into a collage) was that the resulting image contained a genuine depiction of time, since the components were taken at different times.

He also said that the problem with a photo was that it took much less time to take than the viewer spent looking at it. Compared to a drawing or painting that takes much longer to make than to view. I think this is a bit unfair (for me at least) if you take into account the time spent for all the rejected photos :-).
