Scot Free

This is part of the new sea wall at Dymchurch on Romney Marsh in Kent where I was running today (also a much visited place as a child). This area has long been prone to flooding and in the 15th century locals paid a scot tax to subside sea wall building and repairs. If you lived well above sea level you did not have to pay and thus got off "scot free" (so says the sign on the sea wall just behind).
