In the Library

I spent a large part of today helping out in the school library. There is a wonderful scheme called 'Duffy Books in Homes' which is available to schools in lower income areas with the aim of getting books in to homes and developing a love of reading. Children are able to choose  one or two books per term which are given to them free. The scheme sponsors Role Model assemblies where a well known figure comes to talk to the children about their personal love of books and also theatre performances. In addition, there are weekly book prizes for children 'caught being good' and annual book prizes for  Mums or Dads  'caught being good'. Preschoolers are not forgotten and all get a book on their birthday, chosen by their older sibling at the school.

Today I put personal name stickers on approximately 500 good quality books which will be handed out to the children tomorrow at the Role Model Assembly. The children love them.
