Barnard Castle

With the news about King Richard III this week I was reminded of his connection with this castle as we diverted to see a friend on our journey home today.  Barnard Castle was built 900 years ago by Bernard Balliol and the town grew up around it on a hill above the River Tees. As Lord of the Castle from 1474 till his death in 1485 Richard III developed the castle and did much to improve the town. It remained an important stronghold until 1569 before being besieged by the Scots.
Unfortunately we had no time to wander around and this is taken from the car as we waited at traffic lights to cross the bridge over the Tees.

(I will catch up with your journals later)
