Passion vine hopper, Scolypopa australis

The passion vine hoppers suck sap from tender stems and shoots and excrete great quantities of sugary exudates, or honeydew, which is left on the leaf or fruit surface. This rich source of sugar is quickly colonised by airborne fungi, producing sooty mould which sticks to the fruit surface.
