Plaque

This large plaque is part of a sculpture in the town centre to commemorate Barrows industrial past. It is the Hematite Steel Company, later renamed Barrow Ironworks Limited. It was started in 1859 and finaly closed in 1983. At the turn of the 20 century it was the largest steel works in the world. It produced steel for railway lines and they were exported all over the world.
Today all that remains are the slag banks as the main site has all been redeveloped. Another wet day and cool too.
