This the burrow of a wee cutie, the Bearded Dragon.
The female (now there's a surprise!!) digs a burrow and backs into it, laying her eggs and covering up the burrow. The eggs, and the resultant babes, are then left to their own devices.
Apparently she will dig a few test burrows and this may well be one of those as the entrance has been open for a couple of days now.

Looks like a lot of hard work just to abandon it.
There were a couple of other efforts under the same tree root so perhaps the neighbourhood is a bit dodgy!
