Past Times

Was started in 1871 by James Ramsden as the Iron Shipbuilding Company, and soon changed its name to Barrow Shipbuilding Company, then changed to Vickers Armstrong Shipbuilders Limited in 1955 from when these gates originate.
The shipyard has had a few different names over the years and is now BAE Systems Submarine Solutions, and now makes submarines.

At the height of its shipbuilding activity it employed around 17,000 people, now the figure is nearer 4,500.

Over 833 Ships and boats have been built at the Barrow Yard among them HMS Invincible, the SS Oriana, the current Royal Navy flagship HMS Bulwark, and the Vanguard Class submarines just to name a few.
