Capturing my Journey

Morag and her new baby

Morag has had a heifer(female) calf and is very pleased with her. She is a first time calver and doing a super job! We are pleased to get another girl as this is the last year we are breeding pure highland cows for our herd. After this year they will be crossed out and all calves will be sold.

Had a ewe with a set of Suffolk twins this morning and the lambs hadn't fed and were very cold and one of them was particularly weak. We brought them into the shed and I milked the ewe into a jug so I could tube the lambs. They were too weak to sook on a bottle so I have to insert a tube through their mouth and into their stomach to get the milk into them. Its not a pleasant thing to have to do to them but essential to get them going when they are so weak. I also gave them some kick start which is a liquid with glucose and nutritional boost that's great to give the lambs a boost when they are weak. By lunch time they were up and about and feeding from the ewe themselves, so all good there! A few more have lambed today too so slowly getting there.

Quite tired today but been reasonably productive and have even spent an hour doing some of my dog behaviour diploma coursework!! Just about to bath all the dogs and then put on some spot on for the ticks. They are crawling in them. I have been taking at least half a dozen off each dog everyday.

8c 10mph SW cold wind sunshine and hail/rain showers heavy rain overnight last night.
