Saint Mary's

Saint Mary's church is in the Norfolk village of Burgh St Peter.

There's been a church in the site for about 1000 years. The unique feature of this church is the tower which has been described as "pagoda like", "a pyramid", "a monstrosity" and also "a folly". According to church notes it is probably best described as a pyramidal tomb for the Boycott family. Many of the family are buried in the sealed base dating from the 16th century. The design of the tower being apparently inspired by a church seen in Italy.

One other fascinating fact is that the grave of Charles Cunningham Boycott is in the churchyard. His involvement in the Irish "troubles" in the mid 19th century resulted in the introduction to the English language of the word boycott
