Picnic

Taking advantage of the sunny weather, we decided to go for a picnic, today, parking up at Botany Bay and then walking along the canal for a mile or so, up through the locks.

I like the information panels that have been put up en route, like the one explaining how the hook set in a bridge wall was used so that by putting the rope around it, the horse could walk back along the path while still pulling its barge forwards (this was because the path didn't go under the bridge). Over the years, the rope had worn away the iron as you can see here.

We stopped and had our picnic by a lock and as we were eating a barge went through, heading downwards, so the kids were able to see exactly how the locks work.
