Purple sails....little sailors....by the wind sail

Millions of these tiny jellyfish washed up on the Oregon Coast; they are from 1/2 inch to 2 inch in diameter. I chose this single one because I thought it was fascinating....but the photo of the huge number of these washed up on the beach is amazing too. Just imagine millions of these along the shoreline brought in by wave after wave!

According to the news they are called Velella Velella;  massive numbers died off when they got carried in the warmer waters close to shore. They smell is very strong as they lay in the sun on the shoreline. They will be covered by the blowing sand within days and the waves of blue/purple and white will be gone from sight.
