Tian Tan Buddha

At 23 metres/76 feet the Tian Tan Buddha on Lantau Island sits 500 feet above sea level.  It is the world's tallest seated bronze Buddha statue.

The statue is reached by climbing 268 steps and on a hot day it is hard work but well worth the effort to see the statue close up and to take in the splendid panorama on view.

The Buddha's right hand is lifted in a gesture symbolic of a vow to eliminate suffering acting as a shield.  The left hand is placed on the thigh signifying compassion.
