Polio Vaccine

All of these bargain hunters, foraging outside Aldi, will have been vaccinated against polio, at no cost, thanks to the NHS. (Some of us are old enough to have been given it as an injection, rather than orally and are still needle phobic, but that's another story.)
I read today that the Taliban have banned polio vaccination for children in Pakistan. Dreadful don't you think? But do you know why they banned it? Because the CIA used the vaccination programme to infiltrate local communities.
Members of the Pakistani community are now trying to get the programme up and running again. The polio workers are paid £3.50 q day to go into villages to persuade parents to let their children have the vaccine. Many of these workers have been killed by the Taliban and many parents refuse the vaccine for fear of being seen as CIA informers.
