May The Force Be With You...

I had a couple of useful Blips from today’s outing but have got totally side-tracked by this one.

With a very high tide today, the pipe to allow some of the main body of water to drain under the path into an inlet was well under water. All that could be seen was this whirl pool which had twisted the water under the surface like an upside down tornado.  I remembered that in the Southern hemisphere the water was supposed to turn in a different direction to the Northern hemisphere but couldn’t remember which way, for which one.

I googled it when I got home and found it was called the Coriolis force. I only understood about one word in ten of the Wikipedia explanation but other sites explained things more simply. However they couldn’t agree which way the water went for each hemisphere.

The general consensus though was, although it is an actual force, and does effect much larger bodies like hurricanes and cyclones, the effect on small things like plugholes and any drain would be negligible. Any direction the water chooses to go is entirely dictated by previous water movement, design of outlet, wind, a fish swimming by or other similar actions.

So, here is the water, which today in an estuary in the Southern hemisphere is spinning anti clockwise.
