An Unkindness of Ravens

Fantail chick

Autumn has finally arrived, with rain, hail and cold wind. I succumbed and turned the heating on for the first time since Spring.

A family of grey fantails was in the garden for a while today – the adults were nice, but this chick was even nicer (I am assuming it must be the baby, as it didn't have a fan tail and was a lot smaller than the adults). Go large to see the 'whiskers' around its mouth – which help them catch insects in mid-air.

Minor drama over the weekend – N fractured her wrist and we had to go to hospital (I consider myself very lucky to have never had to take either children to hospital before). I was very impressed by The Royal Childrens Hospital in Melbourne – it's a new building and seemed very efficient and thankfully quite quiet (apparently we got in before all the Saturday morning sports injuries started arriving!). So no swimming for a few weeks, no skating, no skateboarding (the cause of the injury!), no inter-school sports – she is devastated!
