A New Day

Pennan, Aberdeenshire

Backblip

Today we decided to drive to the north-east coast and visit several of the fishing villages.  One of these was Pennan, a delightful single row of houses (plus one hotel) and a tiny harbour, sheltered under a massive cliff face.

Some may remember it as one of the locations in the film "Local Hero" and the famous red telephone box is still there, although looking a bit sad and neglected in spite of being a listed building!

Sadly, there have been some serious landslips in recent years and the long term future of the village is in doubt, although most of the properties are now holiday homes.

Another village we visited was Portsoy, where I was easily persuaded to purchase a piece of local pottery (which may feature in a later blip!) and was tempted by some of the Portsoy Marble, which is made into many attractive artifacts.

Our trip back to the cottage this evening along that challenging track was enhanced by the sighting of a herd of over 60 roe deer (all female) in a field about 200 yards from the cottage:-)  We also regularly see brown hares, black grouse, pheasants, partridge, curlews and wagtails and feel cheated if we don't see them all in one evening!
