Old Norwegian Spael sheep (Old Norwegian Short Tail Landrace) seem from the Iron Age. 10 years ago the Old Norwegian spael sheep were almost extinct and an endangered animal breed.

Today about 20 % of all the sheep in Norway are of this breed. The Spael sheep  is considered to have better and more tasteful meat with less fat and richer milk than other sheep breeds.

They are resilient, can be outdoor most of the year, give plenty of lambs and are good mother and protectors of the flock.  They react in a complete different way than other sheep when in danger of being attacked by wolf or other predators. They spread out in a fan shape. The strongest animals run in front to draw predators to themselves, so that the weakest sheep can hide. Since they are very fast, it's almost never registered sheep losses caused by predators. The downside is that they have the same escape behavior towards sheepdogs. They are not just fast runners, they are also good swimmers so not easy to catch.

Lucky me to have these charmers near by me. They are social and curious.
