Walking in Antigua

Antigua was the capital of Guatamala until 1776 when the Spanish Crown ordered that the capital be positioned further away from the earthquakes that caused so much damage to this beautiful city. Many people left and went to Guatamala City, the new capital, to start a new life.

In Antigua many of the colonial houses have been restored and now are galleries, restaurants, bars and coffee houses. It is a Western style city, most of the residents are of Spanish Catholic descent. Many of the churches are still in ruins...very beautiful baroque ruins! The money has never been found to restore all of them.

My collage shows a damaged facade, a yellow coloured restored church and the laundry fountain where local women washed their families clothes.

Tonight we are eating in a Peruvian restaurant with our Bolivian friend!!!

Tomorrow we leave for Honduras for a couple of days
