Fields of Remembrance.....

....are springing up near war memorials all round New Zealand in preparation for Anzac Day. There is a named white cross for each person who died in WW1. Most are already on a memorial of some sort but this is an extra visual reminder of how many lives were lost.
I chose to show just one and liked this particular one because of the shadow it cast on the lawn at the Riwaka Memorial Gardens.
Charles John Harvey was from the Mapua area but was working as a farm labourer in Riwaka when he joined up. He left NZ 2nd April 1917 and went first to Sling Camp in Wiltshire before serving at Etaples. He had various medical problems and was sent back to Walton-on-Thames. However he died of kidney failure at Codford and is buried at St Mary's, New Churchyard, Wiltshire aged 26 years.
