Foulridge tunnel

The start of our walk today.
The 1 mile tunnel under the Pennines.
Foulridge marks the summit level of the Leeds and Liverpool canal. 487 feet and 6 inches above sea level.
There are 4 reservoirs in the area that feed the canal.
In the heyday of the canal, the wharf ( built in 1815 ) bustled with boats.
The mile long tunnel took 5 years to build.
There was no tow path for the horses, and so barges had to be "legged" through the tunnel.
Leggers lay  on the boats bow deck and " walked" along the tunnel walls, pulling the boat with them.
Another glorious sunny day. Quite cool, and made the views so clear.
On the top of the. Hills we could see for miles. Over to Ingleborough one way, and Pendle Hill the other.
A wonderful walk except where our leader went wrong, and we walked over a mile in knee deep heather, and bog!
We were not well pleased!
Called at my brother-in-laws on the way home, and he cooked us a lovely risotto .
A very nice end to the day.
