Wound up in Wexford

Cheow Lan Lake

Spent the day travelling to, and then travelling on, this huge lake.  It was created in 1982.

The trip was advertised as an opportunity to see gibbon and hornbill in the  pristine jungle surrounding the lake.  It involved quite a long road trip, followed by an hour's trip in a longtail boat across to a raft house/restaurant.  The lake was a lovely green colour.  And the scenery as we crossed the lake was spectacular, but sadly the trip was undertaken at full speed, so with little opportunity to look out for interesting wildlife.

The culmination of this travelling was meant to be a trek into the jungle and then into a cave.  Unfortunately, but probably correctly, the consensus of opinion of our guide and others who had done the trek was that it would be too much for my knee.

Instead, we spent 3hrs relaxing reading our kindles on somewhat uncomfortable wooden benches, waiting for the rest of the party to return.

We saw trees moving, suggesting the presence of monkeys or gibbon, and lots of lovely butterflies, but no other wildlife.

After the rest of the group returned, we had another hour's trip across the lake, again at full speed, and a return bus trip to our hotel.

The best wildlife sight of the day was that evening, when a river toad visited the restaurant.

I was impressed by the dead trees standing starkly in the water, suggesting that in places the water was quite shallow, but with no buoys to mark the safe passages.  What would "Elf and Safety" in this country make of this?
