Confluence

'Confluence', as this fountain is named, marks the coming together of four rivers in Hertford: the Beane, Rib, Mimram & Lea, whilst the name 'Hertford' comes from the ford where the Harts (deer) came to drink. The waterways were of huge importance to Hertford's livelihood as a thriving trading place and the market square was established close to the ford. Produce from Hertfordshire farms was floated down the canal to London: the river Lea and the canals fed by it can still be followed all the way into the capital, (which makes for an interesting bike ride).
I can't say this fountain in Market Square is to my personal taste but at least I can appreciate its symbolism so I photographed it whilst in town for a quick lunch.
