Towers....

This picture was taken at the top of Cambridge Street where it turns under the Oxford Road Station viaduct into Whitworth Street. The viaduct used to mark the unofficial edge of the city centre in this part of the city. North of it, offices, shops, theatres, bars, restaurants, museums, galleries....south of it you are in the suburbs.

This position has been the status quo for a 100+ years now but, with the present growth of the city generally, the city centre is bursting out of its traditional space in all directions, including along Cambridge Street here.

I'm liking all the contrasts in this picture. The Victorian brick chimney of Chorlton Mill (now expensive loft apartments) with the concrete of the service towers of new apartment blocks on a tiny space next to the River Medlock. The red of the crane against the blue of the sky. I like the way all three are thrusting into the sky, a metaphor for what Manchester is doing itself these days. In spite of the world wide recession of the last few years, Manchester is coming out of it in a good place.
