Hermitage Castle

We took a detour at Carlisle towards Selkirk to see the Hermitage Castle.  Quite remarkably imposing and astonishing to think this building (more or less) has been here since about 1360, albeit added to and taken away over the years.  For the most part only the shell survives, but it is easy, still, to see this was built as a fortress first rather than a home.  The Borders saw interesting times back then, and by all accounts, this desolate site was one of the more interesting.  It was an experience to stand in the middle and try to imagine what this building has seen in more than 600 years.
