Royal Prison

Loch Leven Castle, Kinross, Scotland.

On 2nd May 1568, Mary Stuart (aka Mary Queen of Scots) escaped from this castle, which sits on an island in the middle of Loch Leven.

She had been imprisoned here for a year, and was forced to abdicate in favour of her infant son James VI.

She was eventually executed, after being found guilty of potting to assassinate her cousin Elizabeth I and claim the English throne.

Thankfully for the newest princess, the royal family have a bit of an easier time of it in the 21st century.
