A Burd. No Bee

I've been meaning to visit the Birds and the Bees pub in Stirling for ages to check out the George Wyllie work there.
George made it back in the late 1960s when he worked alongside Ron McKinven, a star footballer-turned-interior designer (unusual career segue-way 'tis true...).
It pre-dates George's most famous works, the Straw Locomotive and the Paper Boat by at least 20 years.
So after climbing local hill, Dumyat, with the kids, we headed down for tea.
I hadn't appreciated how many works there would be. George was on a roll, clearly.
He made birds (naturally), bees and a bull as well as many other strange beasties - all out of recycled bits and pieces he found at the scrappies.
This fine Burd (as George called them - to use the Scots vernacular) swoops over the front door.
Louise Wyllie (George's elder daughter) and I have written a book called The Making of George Wyllie and we're currently working our way through edits. It is being published by Birlinn on September 17th.
