It's a newly pedestrianised street and I guess the council can't plant trees due to whatever infrastructure is underground. So yesterday about ten of these huge steel cubes appeared. It will be interesting to see what they plant in them.

Street furniture with a pre-rusted finish is now quite common in Gijón. It first appeared perhaps a decade or so back when a long wide principal thoroughfare was was refurbished with huge 'pre-rusted' industrial looking street lights and furniture. It was intended to acknowledge Gijón's declining ship building industry. The style took a while to get used to after the more 'delicate' classic lamplight style, but in the end people have come to like it.
