Sunbathing

I spotted this colourful shorthorn grasshopper basking in the warmth of a black plastic pot. It vanished with alacrity when I got too close. Probably a New Zealand grasshopper, Phaulacridium marginale. They take on the colour of their surroundings. Perhaps this colour was suited to the drought, when the grass was dry.
