Ardahill Ringfort

After a delicious lunch in the sunshine and overlooking the fresh spring growth around the pond, freespiral and I headed out for an explore of two ringforts in the Kilcrohane area. This one is Ardahill, viewed from the mountain is in the most stunning location with commanding views in all directions. Wonderful that a combination of local superstition and land that doesn't lend itself to intensive farming has meant that these defended farmsteads have survived in the landscape since the early medieval period and possibly back into the Iron Age. Next we walked along the shore with gorgeous views to Farramanagh and climbed gates and walls to a smaller cashel (stone ringfort). Perfectly round as is typical but not as elevated as one might expect. loving these explorations and getting to know the historical and archeological landscape better.
