Liberation Day 70

Superb day in St Peter Port:

Breakfast at the Boathouse before a mooch along the piers of stalls and ending up in the Market Square tent to watch and listen to an awesome local jazz band made up of Colin Falla (amazing saxophonist), Peter Mitchell (young talented musician on bass) and Lydia Pugh (wonderful pianist and singer) along with a drummer and guitarist. Great sing along tunes from the 1940s. They were followed by a fantastic trio of UK.1940s/50s style, very animated singers with an accompanied band who were very entertaining- again giving the audience Some great tunes to sing, clap or dance to.

The Countess of Wessex represented the Queen by visiting us for the day and unveiled some sort of monument to mark the occasion. I haven't seen it yet but we lined the street to give her a wave as she was driven past after her speech.

There was a brilliant cavalcade of an amazing large number of WWII military and period vehicles, plus many liberation themed floats by local schools, organisations and families. Thank goodness for the great weather so that thousands of islanders could enjoy the treat! We were also treated to a flyby of military helicopters with their Crew halfway out of the aircraft waving wildly at us!

We also enjoyed watching some children and young people exhibit their street dance skills. It was also lovely to bump into and chat to
Lots of friends.

After 7 hours of being on my feet at 41 weeks pregnant, it was time for supper at one of our favourite pizza establishments- yum!

Had to fit in a bit of Crown & Anchor (Guernsey gambling game) & catch the beginning of the evening music entertainment before making tracks home. We are going to miss the fireworks unfortunately but I'm pooped and it's good to get home to make sure Roxy the cat is indoors:-)

I love Liberation Day to help us remember how lucky we are that our dear Channel Islands are free & try to learn and understand what it was like back in those days. I've never missed celebrating this special day in Guernsey over the last 36 years, except when I was at Uni in the UK. Love our unique Island! I'm not sure you'll find a more patriotic island of people.
