Whitethroat

Dull first thing and again a cool breeze. Blue tits busier than normal so think the eggs have hatched as both seen going in the box with food. Young possibly a day or too old as the female might have brooded them the last couple of cold days. Wren now taking moss into the nest. Late afternoon heard first fledged linnet though they didn’t come into garden.

Sunny afternoon with brisk chill NW breeze. Went out to Widemouth, Lower Cambeak. No butterflies; first burnet roses , thrift, sea campion, bird’s foot trefoil, kidney vetch; the cliffs gold with gorse, the air heavy with their scent; overhead 2 skylarks sang . Also rock pipit, stonechat, kestrel, swallows and martins flying around. Just as we were returning to the carpark we heard a whitethroat and had superb views of it perched on the gorse.

Then went to Hele Bridge on the canal and an extension to the cycle path. Good view of longtailed tits, a few orange tips, and some rather faded peacock butterflies. Found an interesting spider of the Tetragnathae family on some common vetch.
As we neared river Neet amazed and delighted  to see a kingfisher fly over with a fish in its beak, we then saw it fly back upstream as we stood on the bridge.
