Waiting for the buns to rain down....

It was wet: very very wet. It was cold.

But the Morris dancers carried on entertaining the awaiting crowds. Then at 17.55 the town band (playing under the shelter of the magnificent County Hall - see yesterday's blip) played the National Anthem and everyone joined in. Some people even knew the second verse!

Then the bells of the 15th century church of St Nicolas started pealing. There were figures on the church tower - never seen anyone up there before - ever. Think they were from the BBC.

At 6pm precisely, thouands of fruit buns rained down upon the crowd. It was very hard to capture this and I was seriously worried about my camera getting wet. There are a few captures here - each tiny dot in the sky is a fruit bun!

With the help of MOH four buns were captured. He ate one immediately as he needed cheering up from all the rain :)

One I will save - it will go in the airing cupboard and when completely dry it will be varnished to accompany the other one that our youngest son caught in 1995 (aged 6) for the 50th Anniversary of VE Day. We have another too - but I forget exactly what the occasion was - think it might have been the Queen Mother's one hundredth birthday.

You can see a list of all recorded bun throwings since the 1761 coronation of King George III.

Later edit: SunburntPenguin has a wonderful blip of the bun-catching-in-action here.
