Stanley Mills

When we lived in Perth I knew the renovation was going on but it didn't open until after we moved to Singapore and somehow I've never got to visiting in all the years after that. But today we did and it is well worth visiting. It's a Historic Scotland site now with lots of hands-on exhibits.
I never knew I would have had the business acumen to run a mill (but then again with some historical hindsight knowledge it's easier to make business decisions then making them on the spot at the time).  And of course lots of terrible facts about the workers and the conditions and how the Duke of Atholl decided that he wanted places in the Highlands cleared from people who farmed there so he could keep sheep there (the Highland Clearances) and the people had to choice to go to the Stanley Mills and get enough land and wood to build a house and have work at the Mills, or get nothing but get thrown off the land anyway.

Thanks very much for your comments for my noisy snapshot of the Strathearn restaurant last night :-)
