Figure eight join.

It always fascinates me to contemplate how many thousands of miles of wire fencing there is through out New Zealand. When the first settlers arrived here fences were quickly erected using wooden posts and mile after mile of strands of wire. When a coil of wire finished it was joined to the next coil using a figure eight join. This is a very effective knot as it becomes stronger as the wires are tightened. The speed with which these fences went up enabled those early settlers to very quickly be controlling large flocks of sheep.
