An Avid Lensman

Winchester Watermeadows, towards Catherine's Hill

About 7a.m. First train and after cloudy start. Sun sort of lasted for around three hours, allowing good old walk over to St Cross, up to the viaduct, along the cycle track, had flask of coffee and sarnies at St Catherine's Lock (site of old timber mill) then up the steep flight of steps up onto the hillfort that is St Catherine's Hill.

Cloud thickened by then but still fab views, included in the extra photos Winchester Cathedral's temporary 'roof'. Essential repairs are being undertaken underneath this structure, which was put into place by one of the UK's largest cranes (so I understand from local TV news coverage). This is an unedited basic jpeg. You can see the distance I am away by this having been taken with a lens equivalent to 9x magnification (450mm).

Perused the mizmaze, the sheep not trying to follow the curling, twirling patterns within it though. Steep drop down and back into the city.

Looked at and tried a lovely old rare manual focus pristine Nikkor 105mm f1.8 Ai, in London Camera Exchange. But at £499? I was never going to buy it, mind you and they even asked me if I thought the price was fair. The stock answer is always, "to the right customer, it is. You've just got to find that customer!"

Moochy in the cathedral, as I had bought an annual pass. It would have been sacrilege to have not done so. The Crypt had no water in it.

An excellent young man busking, with classical acoustic guitar, through 'treatments', quietly and civilly entertained as I drained the last of my coffee from the flask. His rendition of (in classically blues and jazz style) of 'Mad World' was inspiring. A pound in his guitar case (would have been more, if I were able)

Finally, looked in at Winchester Photographic Society's annual exhibition, which actually ends tomorrow. Outstanding work - makes one want to trade all one's gear in and take up knitting.

Big thanks to all and for everything on yesterday's wistful portrait - cheers!
