Welsh Road Lock

Today’s the day .................... for the Grand Union

The Grand Union Canal is much the way that you would imagine a canal of that name.  It is generously wide for most of its length.  After an investment of some £331,000 in the 1930s, most of the locks are broad enough to take two boats side-by-side.  From its start at Braunston Turn, the canal descends gently into the valley of the Rivers Avon and Leam eventually to pass through Royal Leamington Spa and Warwick.

This one near the small village of Bascote is called the Welsh Road Lock and it recalls the far off days when the adjacent lane was a drover’s road, along which cattle were driven on the long trek from Wales to the fattening fields of East Anglia and Smithfield Market in London.

And here is Wild Goose patiently waiting while the water level drops in the lock and she will be able to sail onwards .......................
