You can go home again

Back in Co Durham for the weekend, EdiSteve and I went back to my home town of Peterlee ('the place to be for industry). It was good to see some of the places I played as a kiddie, but Steve was interested in visiting a protected, Brutalist sculpture by Peterlee designer Victor Pasmore.

Most of us who have lived in Peterlee would shrug at this idea - Pasmore designed flat-topped houses that were fine for sunny countries such as Italy - where I believe he lived - but terrible for the UK; they collect rainwater, and rot. Plus, the man was obsessed by concrete blocks. If Peterlee was an OK place to live it was because of the people, and despite the built environment. Just look at this monstrosity, entitled, non-ironically, Apollo's Pavilion.

You couldn't make it up.
