Two Heads

The Pause in the Jungle

Tom cat, pussy cat,how was your dream?
Was it relaxing or was it a scream?
Curled up in the undergrowth, eyes closed tight.
Ears twitching for any sound that will take you to flight.

Hearing acute, tuned in like electric guitar pick-ups.
Awaiting the vibration to reach those pricked ear cups.
Nose now twitching to capture the odour.
The stimulus that will spring you from cover.

Crouched hidden tiger laying amongst the undergrowth.
You pause, look around with tongue sweeping mouth.
You spent the day patroling the swaying long grass.
Waiting for vermin to scurry their worn trodden pass.

Moved steadily on forward, creeping paw after paw.
Slinking belly, snaking slowly, you move along floor.
The prospect of hunting your prey, then so inviting.
Had kindled in you, that basic instinct for hunting.

In front in the flora, a shrew makes its way.
Its passage so oblivious of the danger this day.
Will it be the prize to fill your feline jaw.
Or another lost catch, a balance of jungle law.
