Sublime Palmyra

It seem that these days I awake to bad news every morning. Today it is that IS fighters have occupied the town of Palmyra in Syria and are in control of the ruins of the ancient Roman town. Given their record elsewhere it is worryingly likely that they will take the sledge hammer and the bulldozer to these important and sublimely beautiful ruins. I can but be grateful that I once walked through the deserted streets as the sun was rising. I'm afraid that it was an experience never to be repeated. It is so, so sad.

I know that I am breaking the rules in posting an old photograph but the rules don't seem very important to me today.
