The cost of education

I must have walked past this plaque on the side of this local school hundreds of times without stopping to read it. This morning however as soon as it came into view I saw the flowers. I immediately recognised them to be the colours of the Spanish republican flag.

The inscription reads:

A los maestros y maestes de La II Republica
que ficieron posible una escuela publica,
integradora y laica. Y especialmente a quienes
pagaron cola vida'l so compromisu cola llibertá.

"To the schoool masters and school mistresses of The Second Republic
who made possible public, integrated and lay schooling. And especially to those who paid with their lives for their commitment to freedom."
