Please stick to the rivers

We'd read about some amazing waterfalls about 45 minutes north of Berastagi. We rented scooters (pretty terrible ones) and set off. The road took us over some mountains and through lots of quaint little villages (although we did see a KFC in one of them). We stopped and asked for directions (using photos of the waterfall) a few times and got a mixture of pointing (in various directions) and confused looks as if it was the first time they'd seen the waterfall.

I tried looking up better directions online and discovered that it was hard to find by road (no kidding) and then it's a two hour hike. He decided to go for a swim in the river instead. It was very secluded and peaceful, perfect for a rest before driving back. We'd planned to stop off at a viewpoint and have a drink. As we pulled up it started to rain, so we took shelter and ate some sweetcorn which was being sold by about 10 different stalls in a row. The rain got much heavier and showed no signs of stopping so we enjoyed the view of the clouds and had a few beers.

A large family from Medan asked to take photos with us, taking it in turns with every family member. It took about five minutes. Then the staff joined in and asked for more photos (always four shots at a time for some reason). Finally the rain stopped and we got back to town.

It was a bit of a failure of a trip but it was still great fun.
