Flowers On The Wall

This wall of flowers is in Ferry Lane, old Chesterton, which leads to the now disused slipway to the ferry crossing over the river Cam. This is part of a conservation area and dates back to at least the 1500's, although there has been a settlement in the area since the Bronze Age There was another ferry crossing on Riverside, where our parents would take us children across to Banham's boatyard. I was fascinated to see the ferryman cranking the chains over a large wheel and taking us to the other side. Sometimes we were allowed to have a go at helping to turn the handle Then my father would hire a large rowing boat and take us up river to The Plough pub at Fen Ditton where we would stop for refreshments. I must say that blipping brings back so many long forgotten memories.
