Behind the curve

G Block, first floor, between Ward 2 and Ward 3.

Through a pair of swing doors from the set of “Doctor in the House” instead of Sir Lancelot Spratt, till the 30th of May 2015, you will find the Alexander Elder War Memorial Chapel.

The Chapel was opened in 1925 to commemorate those that went from the Glasgow Western Infirmary to the Western Front in the 1914-18 Great War.  The last service is today and after the Infirmary closes next week and Glasgow University takes over the site to expand it’s facilities I sadly expect this wonderful example of an Arts and Craft Great War Memorial to “disappear”.

CHAPEL: rectangular plan chapel to rear with Arts and Crafts interior. Exposed sandstone ashlar walls, some timber paneling and timber doors with glazed panels. Tri-partite pointed arched window to E gable end with stained glass; further stained glass to other pointed arched windows. Sandstone ashlar altar with engaged Doric columns. Herringbone pattern timber block floor. Octagonal timber lectern with relief carving of pointed arch detail, set on sandstone ashlar base. Open timber roof with painted rafters and purlins.
