Roman...

...all over the place (sorry).
Started the day off in Glasgow then zipped down to the NE to see my Sister.  We met her and my bro-in-law at Vindolanda, near Hexham.  Fantastic old, Roman ruins near Hadrian's Wall.  The Roman's had a village and fort here for over 300 years. We didn't have time to go the the Roman Army museum, so that's on the list for next time.  The writing tablets that have been excavated at this site are amazing, little everyday details, like our regiment has run out of beer, please send more, are you coming to my birthday party? Little snippets of Roman life, still here after 1700 years or more.  I can't imagine the people who wrote the messages ever thought they'd be read by others so far in the future. 
After Vindolanda we went for a wee wander by the Tyne, saw a lovely Heron and then sought dinner. 

Lovely day and so good to be away from home.  Maybe the grass is greener on the other side ;-)
